  • Boris Johnson begins media blitz but refuses to discuss family life
by Jessica Elgot, Rowena Mason and Rajeev Syal on June 24, 2019 at 10:11 pm

Tory leadership frontrunner has faced mounting criticism that he has been dodging public scrutinyBoris Johnson broke cover on Monday night vowing he would never reveal the events that led to the police being called to the home of his partner Carrie Symonds last week, after neighbours reported a loud row between the couple.Amid mounting criticism that the frontrunner in the Conservative leadership campaign has been dodging public scrutiny, Johnson is now understood to be rolling out a “media blitz” for the coming days, beginning with five closely controlled events on Tuesday, in an attempt to defy accusations that he is in hiding. • In a squall on Lake Geneva in 1819, Shelley has no fear of drowning
by Tim Radford on June 24, 2019 at 8:30 pm

In a vivid letter to his publisher, Lord Byron describes the courage of the English romantic poet It is 1819, and a great poet has a story about the courage of Percy Bysshe Shelley. “He was once with me in a gale of wind, in a small boat right under the rocks between Meillerie and St Gingo,” Byron writes to his publisher, John Murray, in a letter collected in Lord Byron: Selected Prose (Penguin, 1972). He means Saint-Gingolph, on the south bank of Lake Geneva.“We were five in the boat – servant, two boatmen, and ourselves. The sail was mismanaged and the boat was filling fast. He can’t swim. I stripped off my coat – made him strip off his and take hold of an oar, telling him that I thought (being myself an expert swimmer) I could save him, if he would not struggle when I took hold of him – unless we got smashed against the rocks which were high and sharp, with an awkward surf on them at that minute. We were then about a hundred yards from the shore and the boat in peril. He answered me with the greatest coolness, that ‘he had no notion of being saved, and that I would have enough to do to save myself, and begged not to trouble me’.” The boat righted. Shelley lived to drown another day, “the wind having been high enough to tear up some huge trees from the Alps above us”. Continue reading... […]

  • Labour MPs asked by party if they will stand at next general election

  • May yawned. God this was dull. Why was she even here? | John Crace
by John Crace on June 24, 2019 at 6:46 pm

Where once Commons jibes might have hurt, now they bounce off. She has a perspective on her lifeHow times change. Two months ago a statement by the prime minister on the latest EU council meeting would have been considered a significant occasion. One worthy of a full House of Commons. Now the government is so marginal – not just to the EU but to the country itself – that the chamber was barely a third full. And those who did bother to turn up were only there because it was a slow Monday afternoon, there was sod all on TV and they had nothing better to do with their lives.Semi-retirement seems to suit Theresa May. When she first announced she had been forced out of No 10, her face and body appeared contorted with grief and anger. As if the loss was unbearable. Time is proving a quick healer. She is learning to cope with the indifference of her Tory MPs by being equally as indifferent to them. Where once their jibes and accusations might hurt, now they bounce off. She has a perspective on her life. She knows she is surrounded by shabby, untrustworthy careerists and she is going to enjoy every second of schadenfreude as her successors inevitably crash and burn. • FirstGroup investor Coast Capital makes some reasonable points | Nils Pratley
by Nils Pratley on June 24, 2019 at 6:43 pm

Amid a messy breakup strategy, putting new experts on the Firstgroup board makes senseHalf a decade ago, FirstGroup could boast it was “one of the world’s great transport groups”. That, at least, was the line used by Martin Gilbert when he bowed out as chairman after 27 years and, broadly speaking, it was correct. FirstGroup had grown from a few regional bus routes in Scotland to become very big in the UK and the US, as it still is today. There are 100,000 employees, the group carries 2 billion passengers a year and revenues last year were £7.1bn.So not the sort of company to be pushed around by a small but mouthy New York hedge fund? Well, actually, it might be. Continue reading... […]
